Life and Ministry of ChristBirth, Baptism, and Calling

Birth, Baptism, and Calling of Christ

From His coming birth to His baptism and mission—see how Jesus is revealed and begins His work.

Introduction

The early chapters of the Gospel show God introducing Jesus through promise, presence, and calling. What begins in birth and blessing moves toward baptism and public ministry, and each turning point reveals who Jesus is and why He has come.

  • God’s promise
  • Jesus’ preparation
  • Spirit-empowered mission

Three Turning Points

Birth and incarnation

Jesus’ birth fulfills God’s long-promised mercy and places the Savior among His people. Luke 1–2 presents His coming as the arrival of hope, humility, and divine faithfulness.

  • Luke 1:32–33 — He will reign forever.
  • Luke 2:10–11 — The good news is for all people.

Baptism

At Jesus’ baptism, John bears witness, and the Father confirms Jesus as His beloved Son. Matthew 3 and Mark 1 show the beginning of public revelation, where the Spirit marks Jesus for the work ahead.

  • Matthew 3:16–17 — The Spirit descends and the Father speaks.
  • Mark 1:11 — Jesus is identified as the beloved Son.

Calling and commencement

After baptism, Jesus begins to proclaim the kingdom and call disciples. Matthew 4 and Mark 1 show that His mission is not hidden for long; it gathers followers and announces that God’s reign has drawn near.

  • Matthew 4:17 — Jesus calls for repentance.
  • Mark 1:15 — The kingdom of God is at hand.

A Christ-Focused Prayer

Lord Jesus, open my heart to receive the mission You began in humility and obedience. Teach me to trust the Father’s promise, follow the Spirit’s leading, and join Your work with faith and hope. Let the story of Your coming shape the way I live today.
